Why do companies need Search Engine Marketing (SEM)?
Marketing is considered the lifeblood of a business. No matter how good your product or service is, if it is not known, it cannot be purchased.
How then do you make your products or services known? How do you market your wares?
Traditional marketing involves finding a media outlet (print, radio, TV, etc.) who best identifies the demographics (age, gender, median household income, etc.) of one’s desired customer base. Once this demographic match is determined, the content, brand, item, etc. is placed within the view of the designated potential consumers with the hope of attracting their attention.
Then comes Search Engine Marketing.
The internet is literally a network of millions of computers filled with vast amount of information: information about products, services, companies, needs, wants, you name it. Early on, it was recognized that this vast collection of information had to be organized in some logical fashion in order for it to be useful. This led to the development of the search engine.
A search engine consists of a searchable index in which search results are based on a given search phrase or search word entered by the requesting party. It records every request for information on anything: a person, a product, an agency, a place, a service, etc.
This is the important difference of search engine marketing from traditional marketing: the information is served when asked for by the viewer.
What is SEM?
Traditional marketing uses market research demographics to ATTEMPT to narrow a large population down to a targeted POTENTIAL viewer.
Search engine marketing is the opposite. It is the very targeted viewer (consumer) who approaches the merchant (thru search engine data) posting the request (search string) for very specific content (what he exactly needs): say your company’s products or services.
Here's how it goes:
The viewer searches for relevant keywords.
Say, he is looking for a computer, he does a search for "mac computers".
Then the search engine delivers the data being sought. He is given various links showing him data about “mac computers”.
He may see the links above the fold as ad links (Pay-Per-Click or PPC), or in the organic results below known as search engine results.
This manner by which the search data is presented is called Search Engine Marketing.
As per Wikipedia, SEM is a set of marketing methods to increase the visibility of a website in search engine results pages (SERPs).
The three main methods of SEM are:
(1) Search engine optimization (the process of improving rankings for relevant keywords in search
results by tweaking a web site’s structure and content),
(2) Pay per click advertising or PPC (uses sponsored search engine listings to drive traffic to a web site. The advertiser bids for search terms, and the
search engine ranks ads based on a competitive auction as well as other factors;
(3) Paid inclusion
What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization or Search Engine Optimizer.
Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving or tweaking a website so:
1. it will rank well on the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) and will be seen by target viewers;
2. it will have high-quality content and will be appealing to viewers;
3. it will load well on all devices and will provide a good user-experience to viewers;
4. it will be secure.
Technically, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a subset of Search Engine Marketing that deals with improving the number (quantity) of and quality of visitors to a web site by ranking well in natural or organic search results in search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.
It is the science behind search engine positioning.
With proper SEO implementation a website can rank on top search engine positions (thereby ensuring brand visibility on the net) in organic search despite a flurry of competitors whose sites may be enmeshed with a billion others.
The term SEO also refers to Search Engine optimizer, or a consultant who carries out Search Engine optimization projects for clients.
With SEO, a company ensures web visibility for a fraction of the cost it pays for other advertising efforts.
Why do I need SEO?
If Search Engine Optimization is done right, your company's website will not only be visible but will rank high in Google's or Bing's Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). This will translate to an increase in the number of visitors to your site. The higher the SERPs ranking, the higher the increase in traffic.
The higher the increase in traffic the higher the number of potential customers.
